Faithless start the party at O2 Wireless Festival

..dance legends prove that ‘old rave’ still rules!

Faithless laid down the gauntlet to the raft of ‘new rave’ pretenders preparing to play on Saturday, performing a typically raucous dance set on day two of O2 Wireless Festival.

With singer Maxi B celebrating his birthday, the band played a blinding set of classics on Friday night, including a smattering of new material, to the delight of thousands of fans in Hyde Park.

Kicking off with rave anthem ‘Insomniac’, the dance collective played a greatest hits set which included ‘Bring My Family Back’, ‘God Is A DJ’ and ‘Mass Destruction’ – the latter complete with flashing images of Tony Blair.

Generating one of the best party atmospheres in the history of O2 Wireless Festival, the crowd sung happy birthday to a humbled Maxi B as the band left the stage, before they returned and closed with ‘Salva Mea’.

Prior to Faithless’ trumphant headline set, Mark Ronson wowed the crowd with cuts from his covers album ‘Version’, including Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Oh My God’ and The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’.

Phat Planet’s Alex Greenwald lent vocals on Radiohead classic ‘Just’ before singing his own song ‘California’. Ronson’s funk outfit even had time for a cover of ‘Apache’ by The Shadows.

Other highlights from the second day at O2 Wireless Festival included The Gotan Project, Kelis, Pharoah Monch and Just Jack.

Acts taking to the stage on Saturday include ‘new ravers’ Klaxons, CSS and New Young Pony Club, plus the mighty Daft Punk headlining the Main Stage.

The White Stripes get O2 Wireless Festival off to a flyer!

Jack and Meg White ensure a thrilling finale to the opening day in London.

The White Stripes made a colourful return to the capital last night, headlining the first date of the O2 Wireless Festival in a wash of red smoke and light.

After several warm up gigs in London this week, including a special show for pensioners, Meg and Jack got back to what they do best - wowing crowds of thousands.

The pAir played three songs from their forthcoming album 'Icky Thump'; the first single of the same name, 'I'm Slowly Turning Into You' and 'A Martyr For My Love For You'.

The rest of the set was made up from classics from their previous five albums with highlights including 'I Think I Smell A Rat', 'Hotel Yorba' and 'The Denial Twist'.

Playing to a packed Hyde Park, The White Stripes also performed their traditional covers 'Jolene' and 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' before closing with crowd favourite 'Seven Nation Army' and walking off stage hand in hand.

Jack said little during the hour and a half performance, but did make reference to the brilliance of Queens Of The Stone Age, who played beforehand and went about building up an awesome set. New songs 'Sick Sick Sick' and 'Into The Hollow' mixed well with old classics such as 'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer' and 'Go With The Flow'.

Other highlights of the opening day came during Satelite Party's set when Perry Farrell launched into Jane's Addiction classic 'Been Caught Stealing' - it at least went some way to make up for the fact he was wearing a corset.

Polytechnic played a summery headline set in the Tuborg Stage, which was earlier packed out by hotly tipped band The Lea Shores, while The Bees and Air both put in good performances in the XFM Tent.

But it was The White Stripes who stole the show on the opening night of the O2 Wireless Festival in London. Their set list was as follows:

'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground'
'When I Hear My Name'
'Hotel Yorba'
'Icky Thump'
'I'm Slowly Turning Into You'
'I Think I Smell A Rat'
'I'm A Martyr For My Love For You'
'Death Letter'/'The Big Three Killed My Baby'
'In The Cold Cold Night'
'Jolene'
'Ball & Biscuit'
'Blue Orchid'

'The Denial Twist'
'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself'
'We're Going To Be Friends'
'Seven Nation Army'

The White Stripes play Harewood House tonight (Friday) for the opening night of O2 Wireless Festival in Leeds, while Faithless play the second night in London.

Kaiser Chiefs close O2 Wireless Festival

Kaiser Chiefs closed the best ever O2 Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park last night.

The Leeds band wowed Hyde Park with a headline set of classics and a helping of tracks from their second album ‘Yours Truly Angry Mob’. The five piece set the Sunday party mood from the start with opener ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’ before closing the festival with ‘Oh My God’.

Festivals are becoming old hand to Ricky Wilson and co after they headlined the dual in event in their hometown of Leeds the previous night. ‘I Predict a Riot,’ and ‘Ruby’ were crowd pleasers as the revellers continued to party in the rainy capital.

Warming up the evening included a crop of the best in British indie. The Chiefs were preceded by Editors who showcased material from their new album, as well as pleasing the crowds with the big hits from their debut including ‘Munich’ and ‘All Sparks’.

The Cribs also mixed their set with the old and the new as the three Jarmen brothers played ‘Another Number’ and their latest single ‘Men’s Needs’. Meanwhile The Rakes filled the XFM stage and to perform ’22 Grand Job’ and ‘Strasbourg’

Pigeon Detectives, Mumm-Ra, and The Twang all performed throughout the day with highlight sets from Good Shoes and Glaswegian three-piece 1990’s.

Daft Punk's set storms the O2 Wireless Festival

Daft Punk performed a breath-taking headline show on the third day of the O2 Wireless Festival in London.

Disguised in their traditional robot gear, the pair played a pounding hour and a half mix of their greatest hits, including ‘One More Time’, ‘Da Funk’ and ‘Around The World’.

In what will be remembered as a classic Hyde Park performance, the duo made the crowd wait for several minutes before returning with an encore. It included a reworked version of ‘Music Sounds Better Than You’ by band member Thomas Banglater’s Stardust guise.

Klaxons were among the thousands of fans watching the historic show. Singer Jamie Reynolds told us: “It’s been absolutely incredible, a ridiculous day. We had about 10,000 people trying to cram into a tent that can hold just a couple of thousand. It kicked off, it was insane.”

“I came here last year to watch The Stokes and it lacked that real festival atmosphere. It’s so much better this year, a lot edgier. It’s like any festival really, it takes a bit of time to realise what it is. I think Wireless is now up there with the rest of the big ones.”

Fans had to be turned away from Klaxons’ earlier headline set in the XFM Tent, prompting Jamie to dedicate ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’ to “everyone outside”.

Elsewhere, LCD Soundsystem played a sold set which included the very apt ‘Daft Punk Is Playing In My House’ and epic new single ‘All My Friends.

However, the US band were arguably outshone by CSS, who performed on the Main Stage before them and treated fans to hits including opener ‘Alala’ and closer ‘Let’s Make Love…’. Singer Lovefoxxx teased the crowd by stripping out of her rainbow tinsel cat suit to reveal another all-in-one adorned with luminous cubes, before sucking on helium to alter her voice.

Other acts playing at the London leg today's O2 Wireless Festival included New Young Pony Club, Simian Mobile Disco, Datarock and Calvin Harris. Kaiser Chiefs headline the final night tomorrow (Sunday).
